Second-round notebook – Turning Stone Resort Championship
* Jason Day had a hole-in-one on the par-3 sixth hole with a 6-iron from 179 yards. It was the third career ace for Day, but his first on the PGA Tour. It is the 25th hole-in-one of the season on Tour. Day also had an eagle on Thursday, holing out from 118 yards on the par-4 14th hole. Then two holes later, he nearly aced the par-3 16th hole, with his tee shot coming to rest 14 inches from the hole.* Jason Day, at 6-under 138, is one of three PGA Tour rookies currently inside the top 10 on the leaderboard. Joining the 20-year-old Aussie is Dustin Johnson and Kyle Thompson – both at 4-under 140 and currently tied for seventh place.
* Heavy rains and hail forced a 16-minute suspension of play beginning at 11:22 a.m. Another sleet storm forced a 71-minute delay beginning at 12:14 p.m. Darkness forced the third and final suspension of play at 6:37 p.m., with 23 players yet to complete their round. The second round will resume at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, with third-round tee times running from approximately 10:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. with threesomes off of split tees.
* This represents the 19th PGA Tour event in 2008 to be suspended due to weather-related issues.
* Jeff Overton holds the clubhouse lead at the Turning Stone Resort Championship with a 3-under 69 on Friday. At 8-under 136, he holds a one-stroke advantage over Tag Ridings (68) and a two-stroke cushion over Jason Day (69). Overton finished 12th at the 2007 Turning Stone Resort Championship.
* The key to Overton’s round on Friday? He hit all 18 greens in regulation, a statistical category in which he ranks a distant 145th among Tour players.
* Should his lead hold up, it will represent the third 36-hole lead of Jeff Overton’s career. He shared the lead after two rounds with Tom Pernice Jr. earlier this season at the AT&T National, on his way to a T9 finish. Overton also held the second-round lead at the 2007 Wyndham Championship, eventually finishing with a career-best runner-up finish.
* The second-round leader/co-leader has gone on to win 18 of 41 stroke-play events on the 2008 PGA Tour, including most recently Camilo Villegas at the BMW Championship.
* The projected cut currently lies at 4-over 148. Last year’s cut, by comparison, was 4-under 140.
* Casey Wittenberg, who is playing this week thanks to a T4 finish at the Viking Classic, posted a second consecutive 2-over 74 and is sitting directly on the cutline at 4-over. Wittenberg is currently No. 12 on the Nationwide Tour money list, with $255,142, and all but guaranteed of becoming one of the 25 players who will earn their PGA Tour card for the 2009 season. Wittenberg is perhaps best known for his runner-up finish at the 2003 U.S. Amateur Championship to Nick Flanagan.
* Defending champion Steve Flesch posted a 1-over 73 on Friday and at 3-over 147 appears safe to play on the weekend.
* Champions Tour member and two-time B.C. Open winner Joey Sindelar has two holes left to play on Saturday morning to complete his second round. The Horseheads, NY native and local favorite sits at 4-over for the Tournament and currently on the cutline.
* Six Australians currently reside inside the top 20 on the leaderboard, including Jason Day (3rd), Mark Hensby (T4), Robert Allenby (T4), Mathew Goggin (T11), Steve Allan (T11) and Nick O’Hern (T18).
* John Riegger (hand), Chris Stroud (wrist), Jeff Maggert, Kirk Triplett and Doug LaBelle II all withdrew during the second round.
