Final-round notebook – BMW Championship

Photo - Dudley Hart * Dudley Hart recorded three of the 19 total bogey-free rounds at Bellerive Country Club last week. The entire list includes:
Rd. 1: Dudley Hart; Rd. 2: Phil Mickelson, D.J. Trahan, Aaron Baddeley, Rory Sabbatini, Billy Mayfair; Rd. 3: Camilo Villegas, D.J. Trahan, Dudley Hart, Angel Cabrera, Tim Herron, Brandt Snedeker, John Merrick; Rd. 4: Dudley Hart, Stephen Ames, Fredrik Jacobson, Steve Stricker, Ben Curtis, Carl Pettersson.

* Making his 86th start on the PGA Tour, Camilo Villegas posted a final-round 2-under 68 on Sunday to claim his first career victory at the BMW Championship. At 15-under 265, he finished two strokes ahead of Dudley Hart (65). His previous best finishes were runner-up efforts at the 2007 Honda Classic, 2006 FBR Open and the 2006 Ford Championship at Doral.

* Camilo Villegas’ victory is worth 11,000 FedExCup points and moves him to No. 2 on the points list, with 112,050 points. Vijay Singh (T44), with 122,651 points, assured that he will clinch the FedExCup by completing 72 holes at THE Tour Championship presented by Coca-Cola. Even a last place finish for Singh in Atlanta would guarantee 2,000 points, more than enough to secure his victory in the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup.

* At the 2007 BMW Championship, three players were able to move into the top 30 on the points list to advance to THE Tour Championship: Stewart Cink, Tim Clark and Camilo Villegas. In 2008, Dudley Hart and D.J. Trahan performed the feat:
Player Finish/BMW Current FEC Rank Prior FEC Rank
Dudley Hart 2nd No. 14 No. 67
D.J. Trahan T5 No. 25 No. 35

* As a result, Geoff Ogilvy and Brandt Snedeker dropped out of the top 30 this week at the BMW Championship and are as a result eliminated from the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup:
Player Finish/BMW Current FEC Rank Prior FEC Rank
Geoff Ogilvy T28 No. 32 No. 30
Brandt Snedeker T55 No. 34 No. 29

* Steve Stricker has never finished outside of the top 20 in a PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup event. Last year, he finished first at The Barclays, T9 at the Deutsche Bank Championship, third at the BMW Championship and T17 at THE Tour Championship presented by Coca-Cola. He has T19, T13 and Sunday’s T10 finish under his belt so far this year.

* Making his 387th start on the PGA Tour, Jim Furyk finished T3 at the BMW Championship. He is still seeking his first victory since stepping into the winner’s circle at the 2007 Canadian Open. Since joining the Tour in 1994, Furyk has won at least one event every year with the exception of his rookie season in 1994, 1997, 2004 and so far in 2008. Furyk, No. 4 on the points list, continues to progress in the Playoffs, finishing T12 at The Barclays, T7 at the Deutsche Bank Championship and T3 this week.

* Camilo Villegas’ wire-to-wire win is just the second of the season. K.J. Choi won in the same fashion at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

* The BMW Championship (dating back to the inaugural Western Open in 1899) has now had 11 wire-to-wire winners. Dating back to 1934, the only wire-to-wire winners (no ties) at the Tournament are Nick Price (1993), Tiger Woods (2003) and Camilo Villegas (2008).

* Camilo Villegas, who has made five consecutive starts at the BMW Championship, received sponsor’s exemptions into the Tournament in 2004 and 2005. His previous best finish at the BMW Championship – prior to Sunday’s victory – was a T7 in 2007.

* Seven players recorded all four rounds in the 60s this week, including champion Camilo Villegas, Dudley Hart, Anthony Kim, Stephen Ames, Hunter Mahan, Tim Clark and Lucas Glover.

* Two-time PGA Tour winner Dudley Hart finished second for the fourth time in his career. Sunday’s second-place finish is his best outing since finishing runner-up at the 2004 EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

* Top 10 players on the FedExCup points list following the BMW Championship:

2. Camilo Villegas 112,050
3. Sergio Garcia 110,900
4. Jim Furyk 109,130

7. Justin Leonard 108,138
8. K.J. Choi 106,846
9. Phil Mickelson 106,701
10. Ben Curtis 106,202

* Justin Leonard followed up consecutive T7 finishes at The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship with a T17 finish this week at the BMW Championship. At No. 7 on the FedExCup points list, Leonard will be making his 400th career start at THE Tour Championship presented by Coca-Cola.

* With Camilo Villegas’ win on Sunday, the third-round leader has won 21 of 39 stroke-play events on the PGA Tour in 2008.

* Dating back to 1970, the third-round leader/co-leader at the BMW Championship has won 20 times in 39 Tournaments, including Camilo Villegas on Sunday.

* Chad Campbell withdrew earlier this week (prior to the start of the second round) due to his then expectant wife, Amy, having contractions. They had a healthy baby boy, named Dax Phillip, on Saturday (7 pounds, 10 ounces). Campbell received no FedExCup points this week, but still managed to advance to the THE Tour Championship, finishing in the final qualifying spot at No. 30 and 242 points ahead of No. 31 Stephen Ames.

* The par-70 Bellerive Country Club course yielded a 69.529 average during the final round, bringing the cumulative average for the week to 69.370. The par-4 18th hole played the hardest this week at 4.194, while the par-5 eighth hole was the easiest at 4.667.
