Stricker leads by two after posting 63
NORTON, Mass. - Steve Stricker and Scott Verplank dined together on Wednesday night and had different reactions to their meals on Federal Hill in Providence, RI. Verplank got sick, Stricker didn't. That fact, however, affected neither in a negative way in the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second of four PGA Tour playoff events. Stricker had a flawless round with eight birdies and no bogies and grabbed the lead at 8 under par, two shots better than the trio of Angel Cabrera, Justin Leonard and Verplank. They were the leaders after the morning wave was completed.
Jim Furyk teed off in the afternoon and started with four straight birdies and added another four, including back-to-back at 17 and 18 to tie Stricker for the lead.
